Phlebotomy Training for Clinical Research Coordinators

Division of Clinical Research
Ended: Oct. 25, 2018

The Division of Clinical Research (DCR) is offering Phlebotomy Training for Clinical Research Coordinators. Offered monthly through the DCR, these trainings will provide a review of the fundamentals of phlebotomy as well as a guided practice session where attendees will practice drawing blood on a mannequin arm.

Participants will be required to complete their clinical experience and competency assessment under the supervision of qualified staff members within their own research settings.

Please note: practice draws on the mannequin arm will not count towards the number of successful blood draws required to complete the phlebotomy competency assessment.

This two-hour training is limited to 8 individuals to facilitate interaction.

**MGH Clinical Research Personnel Only**

Please contact dcredu@partners.org with any questions.

Anonymous: I would appreciate more practice finding veins on people and working with the dummy to get a feel for how you want to hold the needle, etc. If it is not possible to condense the information part of the class, I would be interested in a second, entirely practice-based class.

Anonymous: I think the course should devote some time to actually listing out the steps in drawing blood and ensuring the class understands before practicing on the dummy. I understand there's a variety of "styles" but I believe many people in my group would have benefited from a more rules-based approach. It would have been nice to also practice finding veins on real people (even if you can't draw their blood) and to touch on any methods to help patients feel more calm while having their blood drawn.

Anonymous: As it was my first time ever learning about the practical phlebotomy skills, I wish there had more instruction or more information about what we are looking for when we draw blood from a person. Before taking part in the simulation I would have appreciated a moment to hear about what I'd be looking for if it was an actual person.

Alyssa P: Excellent course! The instructor was professional and thorough yet approachable, course was kept to an appropriate length. The only thing I'd like to see added to the content is practicing a blood draw on a real volunteer after practicing on the dummy arm several times, but I understand that that may not be possible. I just took the ECG training and liked being able to practice on an actual person, but ECG is lower risk and non-invasive.

I would have liked to practice more on others in the session, although I understand that might not be feasible due to sanctions. Overall, very informative!

Anonymous: I didn't find the class very helpful. We only did one practice stick with the mannequin and that was it. I would have liked for the instructor to speak in very specific detail about exactly what to do, and to explain more the reasoning behind each step. I feel entirely unprepared to draw blood.
