MGH Division of Clinical Research

Phlebotomy Training for Clinical Research Coordinators

Ended: Oct. 4, 2017

The Division of Clinical Research (DCR) is offering Phlebotomy Training for Clinical Research Coordinators. Offered monthly through the DCR, these trainings will provide a review of the fundamentals of phlebotomy as well as a guided practice session where attendees will practice drawing blood on a mannequin arm.

Participants will be required to complete their clinical experience and competency assessment under the supervision of qualified staff members within their own research settings.

Please complete the online portion of phlebotomy training prior to the live session. Here is the link: http://www.healthstream.com/HSAPP/CoursePreEnrollment?courseId=7df25b61-356b-e811-9b16-005056b11cd6&ReturnURL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.healthstream.com%2fHSAPP%2fCoursePreEnrollment%3fcourseId%3d7df25b61-356b-e811-9b16-005056b11cd6&courseVersion=1

Please note: practice draws on the mannequin arm will not count towards the number of successful blood draws required to complete the phlebotomy competency assessment.

This two-hour training is limited to 8 individuals to facilitate interaction.

Reviews

Anonymous: This class was a great experience and the instructor was informative, helpful, and really wanted to us to learn proper technique. It would be nice to have a part two of the class to practically apply our skills with instructor supervision to obtain clinical phlebotomy training.

Anonymous: Overall good introduction to phlebotomy. We had a great instructor who watched the draws and gave a lot of feedback on safety and technique which was very helpful. I think more practice on the fake arm would be helpful, as well as a separate section where we could practice draws on each other with instructor supervision.

Anonymous: In the last section where we were given practical experience at sticking the manikin - there were a number of mistakes made and no feedback was given, for example, one person uncapped the butterfly needle prior to attaching the vacutainer which resulted in the needle dangling everywhere and being unsafe. I think that this part of the session should be used as an opportunity to receive immediate feedback on your technique in order to improve.

Anonymous: I think more hands on learning would have been helpful (instead of just one stick per person). Felt like most of the in-person course was just reviewing the online modules we were assigned. Also felt like it should have been specified to practice balancing hand on mannequin arm when performing stick because this helped me tremendously in steadying my hand. Really nice and helpful instructor though.

Anonymous: I think the course should devote some time to actually listing out the steps in drawing blood and ensuring the class understands before practicing on the dummy. I understand there's a variety of "styles" but I believe many people in my group would have benefited from a more rules-based approach. It would have been nice to also practice finding veins on real people (even if you can't draw their blood) and to touch on any methods to help patients feel more calm while having their blood drawn.

Before taking part in the simulation I would have appreciated a moment to hear about what I'd be looking for if it was an actual person.

Alyssa P: Excellent course! The instructor was professional and thorough yet approachable, course was kept to an appropriate length. The only thing I'd like to see added to the content is practicing a blood draw on a real volunteer after practicing on the dummy arm several times, but I understand that that may not be possible. I just took the ECG training and liked being able to practice on an actual person, but ECG is lower risk and non-invasive.

Anonymous: The instruction for automatic machines was "ask your department." Would have been helpful to try the system at MGH, even if it changed later on.

Anonymous: I didn't find the class very helpful. We only did one practice stick with the mannequin and that was it. I would have liked for the instructor to speak in very specific detail about exactly what to do, and to explain more the reasoning behind each step. I feel entirely unprepared to draw blood.

Anonymous: Wish the course was longer so we had more time to practice on fake arm. Instructors were thorough, informative yet laid back, which I really liked. Made me comfortable, even though I was nervous for my first time.

Anonymous: Would be helpful to spend more time on feeling for and finding real, human veins instead of just going through steps once on the dummy arm. Spent a lot of time on tying tourniquets over finding the vein on different people
