Considering Applying for an NIH Career Development Award (K Award)? What You Should Know Before Applying

Ended: Dec. 4, 2019

NIH mentored K awards are Career Development Awards that support mentored research and research training for clinical scientists for up to 5 years. If you are thinking about applying for a K award, please join us for this general information session on the awards and application process.

Karen K. Miller, MD and Andrew Nierenberg, MD, will discuss topics such as:

• Which K is right for you?
• What are the components of the grant application?
• When should you apply?
• What resources are available to help your write the proposal?

Please note: A formal, multi-session course on preparing a proposal for an NIH Career Development “K” Award will be offered in February 2020. The application process will begin in December 2019. The formal course is specifically for those who have started to work on a K award application and are planning to submit a proposal within the next year.

Reviews

Anonymous: This was a great, concise overview to K grants. I appreciated both the high-level advice on the philosophy behind the K grants and the appropriate mindset/narrative with which to craft a grant proposal, as well as the step-by-step guide to the application itself. (Not sure if the audience was in a post-lunch haze, but it was a pretty tough crowd! I for one appreciated the humor and friendliness of the speakers..)

Anonymous: Some really nice insight into the behind the curtain workings of the K grant process of award and from a study section and institutional point of view. The talk really lays out exactly the mindset of what the NIH is looking for in an application/applicant and gives some great base knowledge to start crafting your application, with particular emphasis on the pertinent deadlines for submission and timelines of review to guide your planning and decision making process.

Anonymous: Not enough for non-clinicians, i.e., more info regarding the K99 for example would have been nice. Especially when the course is advertised for all K's not just focused on clinician researchers.

Anonymous: It was helpful and both presenters were clearly invested in the mentoring piece. The last slide was missing her credentials. She has the male's credentials listed but not hers. I am sure it was on accident but it is odd, especially in light of women in science being treated differently as is.

Anonymous: Overall, great and concise overview to the K award and the preparation required to apply for one. A few slides on discrete examples of how past applicants put together their mentorship teams and their timelines for application (and successful funding) would have been helpful. Additionally, I think slightly more information on the Conquering the K course would have been helpful to know when it would be appropriate to sign up for that course.

Anonymous: I think it could be also helpful to provide examples about how people developed or chose their mentor teams as well as training plans. Although this will vary from person to person, a slide or two going over a few examples could be a useful addition.

Anonymous: While the instructors knew a great deal of information about K awards for MDs and Clinical Psychology PhD, they had no idea about the popular K01 awards for research PhDs. If they were only going to focus on MDs and Clinical PhD K awards, this should have been mentioned in the title. I would not have wasted my time. There was not much in the talk that I did not already know.

Anonymous: Just one small thought for consideration. The slides said the K99 was an exception to the clinical investigator qualification but there are other Ks that require a doctoral degree only with no clinical training. Yes, a slide that came later explained that there are other Ks, but that statement made about K99 being the exception is misleading and lead me to believe it was the only K mechanism not for clinical investigators. Perhaps there you could list the other Ks that do not require a clinical degree (K01) so the audience doesn't think the K99 is the only exception. Lovely job.

Anonymous: Thank you very much! This was an excellent, concise introduction to the K series. I would also have appreciated a little more detailed information about the Conquering the K course, so that I know what benefits/experiences that course will provide and can weight the pros/cons (mainly, lack of time) for joining it.

Anonymous: The title of the talk is a bit misleading. This session is only for clinical scientists (with a clinical degree), not research scientists (PhDs). This information is somewhat mentioned in the course description which I missed reading. So it was not very helpful for me as I wanted to know about the K01s, K22s and K99s. This was exclusively K08, K23. I believe its a good primer for clinical scientists.
