Brian Healy, PhD, MGH Biostatistics Center
This course will provide clinical researchers with a solid foundation in biostatistical concepts. Intended for those with minimal statistical experience, these five lectures will serve as an introduction to biostatistical issues in clinical investigation and will prepare students for more advanced courses on clinical trial design and biostatistics offered through the DCR’s Center for Clinical Research Education.

Anonymous: This is one of the best biostatistics classes I have ever taken. Dr Healy can communicate complex statistical concepts in a very clear and engaging way. The class is very engaging from the first few minutes of the first lecture. I especially like that he promotes asking questions in the chat and he tries to answer all of them. Also, I think the teacher has a great sense of humor, and is respectful of the student's questions and comments. I enjoyed following this class and have learned a good deal.

Anonymous: Dr. Healy was great about answering questions from participants, and I liked the format of stopping lecture every so often for people to catch up/ask questions. The slides were generally less useful that when he would pull out key distinctions from them/rephrase...except the slides from the lectures including power calculations and KM curves, which had extremely useful and simple graphical/distribution illustrations.
I found it a bit dry at times, and the examples weren't always that useful to me. I've taken stats in multiple iterations before, so I was hoping for a refresher, but I found myself googling more during lectures than I'd like.
That being said, I enrolled in his upcoming sessions for stats in R, also as a refresher, hoping that it integrates these basic lectures and solidifies it better. Overall, I found that the basic course was a nice reminder of how to READ scientific paper stats, perhaps more than conduct them yourself. I noticed my eyes skimming/glazing over less when reading the literature and seeing confidence intervals, stat methods, etc.

Ranjan A: Never did I imagine I could get excited about statistics. Professor Healy is engaging, positive, responsive, and creative in his approach to conveying the concepts and mechanics of statistical thinking as a toolset to improve the quality of research. By the way, don't be shy about speaking up in class, Professor Healy's approach is very interactive and the learning will be the better for it.

Anonymous: Great course - covers all the basics thoroughly. Dr. Healy's love of statistics helps transform what is often a very dry subject into interactive material. The only constructive feedback for the course would be to wait to send out slides until just before the actual session so that they accurately reflect the updates he often makes before the session.

Anonymous: This is a great overview of approach to study design and statistical concepts. While details of statistical tests are outside the scope of this course, it gives an excellent framework to the clinician scientist to start approaching basic methodology of clinical studies. Brian is an excellent, very engaged teacher. Highly recommended!
