MGH Division of Clinical Research

R User Group Meeting

R is a free and open programming language for statistical computing, data analysis, and graphical visualization. Along with this powerful software, comes a dynamic and vast community. The Partners R User Group seeks to bring this community together to share ideas, discuss R related topics, and provide direction for new and experienced users.

The main theme of this R User Group Meeting is "RShiny!"

We have our R scripts for data analysis and data visualization. And we want to share this. R Shiny server makes this really easy.

We are pleased to have 3 "Show-And-Tell" speakers. They will share their experience in developing Shiny apps.

Monica Gerber (MGH for Children)
Monica was lucky enough to attend R conference by Rstudio last February. She will share her experience and what she learned from the conference.
Also, she will talk about her Shiny app, Hardship_Index (available via shinyapps.io)
Randall Newmark (REDCap, Partners)
There is high demand on reporting tools with REDCap data. Randall will show that RShiny application can be a nice reporting tool for REDCap.
Amir Mina & Alex Banks (Endocrinology, BWH)
Amir and Alex developed their Shiny app - A Web Application for Indirect Calorimetry Analysis. They will share the goal of the application, stories behind the development and some RShiny development tips.

Other topics for this meeting include:
Plans to build and grow Partners R Community
R Training Plans and Announcement
Open Discussion about Partners R Settings

This is an informal event for employees who work within the Partners network.
Pizza and beverages will be provided.
Registration is required. Please click enroll and use the link in the application to fill out an additional registration form on RISC. Contact cpeters11@partners.org with any questions.

Anonymous: Great to have an R community! I enjoyed the lightning talk format and having an online forum would help supplement the in-person meetings. Thank you for organizing this!

Anonymous: I really appreciate Henry's effort to host events where R users can connect with each other. Knowing other people in the R community can make such a big difference -- I will definitely continue to attend these group meetings! For this last one, specifically, I would have preferred if more of the time had been put aside for meeting and talking to other people one-on-one or in small groups. In my opinion, this is the the best way to build an actual community and take advantage of the fact that dozens of Partners R users are all in the same room. I did think the talks were interesting, but 3 hours of talks is too much. Thanks so much for organizing, Henry!

Anonymous: I am very happy that Henry decided to launch this community. Yesterday, I could only stay until 7.30pm, so my comments are limited to the content I was exposed to until that time. I learned a lot from Henry's brief presentation. I look forward to testing RStudio on the partners servers and how to connect directly to the EDW. I would **love** if next time we could also cover how to automate scripts with very concrete examples. Promoting that people bring in their laptops to try on their own with pre-built scripts would make it incredibly useful, even if it is just with a couple of small examples, although perhaps this is mostly for a formal training session. Last, but not least, while I understand that there are non-trivial scheduling challenges, a session that goes from 6pm to 9pm is really very long and hard to stay for the full time for people with family commitments after work. Perhaps if it started at 5pm, I could've got a bit more from it. In any case, I look forward to learning more about the Intermediate training for myself and to refer colleagues to future Basic Training sessions as well (my manager already approved of that!). Overall, great initiative! Thank you!

Anonymous: This user group meeting felt like an excellent community for somebody like me who tends to work isolated from other people who use R or do any kind of data analysis. I am new to R so I enjoyed all the presentations, everybody was great and Henry is really nice and helpful. I hope we can get the content through slides/e-mail and I also would hope more R user group meetings within the partners organization can occur more often.

Anonymous: I wish the speakers showed us more about how Shiny, R, and RedCap actually work (like do a demonstration or something), rather than just gloss over and talk needlessly about the talks at the RStudio conference (not helpful at all). the first speaker was good! I was hoping to see more of executing R codes and learn about Shiny. The second speaker was meh...by the third one I got tired and when home early.

Anonymous: Henry is great. He motivates me to attend future meetings. The talks that followed were good, but not great. I only had a moderate feel for what they were doing and trying to show, and there was limited teaching showing exact code to get R to do the various desired functions. I was definitely interested to learn more about how to use R to analyze the data stream from RedCap.

Carolyn H: i was very happy to meet other R users with a range of experiences, I am glad that the group has come together and i will attend to learn uses and apps and hopefully share what I will build. I hope we get the slides because you cant see the small print. The social networking was good. I would prefer to meet an additional time for 2 h than to have a 3h meeting ending at 9pm. Henry is a great leader and organizer- and he is funny. Many thanks for the great presentations.

Kevin M: I was expecting more interaction versus slide presentations. Perhaps as a follow-up or in the next session. It amazes me that R user are having challenges with R. It makes me feel better because I am having some of the same challenges. Thanks Kevin.
