How to Communicate Science and Influence People

As researchers, it is critical that we develop the ability to explain the significance of our work to lay audiences. If we can clearly articulate the importance of our research, we can be stronger advocates for research funding and better at explaining what we’re doing and why it matters.
The Mass General Research Institute has invited the Alan Alda Center for Science Communication to bring you a unique interactive program designed to help you improve your science communication skills.

How to Communicate Science and Influence People is an interactive plenary session that helps researchers craft short, clear, conversational statements about what they do and why it matters.

The session consists of an interactive presentation and discussion on interpreting technical material, and using examples and analogies to illuminate unfamiliar concepts. We will address problems and solutions that occur in public interactions, as well as in peer-to-peer communication.
Participants will practice clearly speaking to non-scientists about their work and may take part in improvisation exercises.

Presenter: Dr. Evonne Kaplan-Liss is Medical Program Director for the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and serves on the Alda Center’s steering committee.
