MGH Division of Clinical Research

Cognitive Interviewing

Ended: June 23, 2021

*Please note- This course is only offered to MGH faculty and staff

This one session course will guide clinical researchers on how to utilize cognitive interviewing for instrument development. We’ll address how to use this technique to collect data to enhance the validity of an assessment instrument (survey) and assess participants’ understanding of an item and responses to an item. The course will be most beneficial for individuals who have an interest or experience in survey development.

Tingyee C: As someone with no experience working with cognitive interviewing, some of the content went over my head. I especially appreciated Dr. Neil discussing real examples to provide more context for how certain methods are implemented: e.g. the coin flipping metaphor for explaining randomization in the consent process or virtual human usability testing.

Anonymous: The material was very relevant to what I am working on in my role at MGH, but the class was very fast-paced to the level that I don't think I was really able to digest much of what was being said. I'm grateful to have the slides available for review because I really didn't process much of what was being taught during this class. The class was not very interactive as well. I would like to see this built out to a longer workshop where the participants in the class can be more fully engaged into the material. Speaking as someone who has been on the receiving end of cognitive interviewing who is now in the position to design these types of instruments, I believe that the people designing instruments should feel heavily integrated and invested into what they produce so that they can best serve their target populations. I would like to see future iterations of the class be able to really do that for the future participants, to really lay the human element on thick.

Anonymous: I attended this course hoping to obtain further instruction on how to use cognitive interviewing to develop a survey. Dr. Neil was a good presenter (approachable, well-spoken, animated), but he did seem to rush a bit through the content and use some terms that I was not familiar with, which caused me to get somewhat lost. I think the talk could have been improved by including more definitions for some of the jargon that he used. Perhaps incorporating a brief survey of the audience to understand why different members attended the course (e.g. how many of you are creating a survey, performing cognitive interviewing for health related materials, etc) would help guide the emphasis of the talk.
