Conquering the K is a comprehensive, five-session course, which focuses on the preparation of an NIH career development proposal. MGH faculty will discuss research design and the career development plan, focusing on how all the sections of the application must fit together to demonstrate the applicant’s commitment to and potential for becoming an independent investigator. Hands-on workshops and a mock study section are included to help participants prepare each section.

Application deadline is Monday, January 27, 2020. Due to the interactive design of this course, there will be a limited number of spots. ** Incomplete applications will not be considered **

Who should attend? Fellows and instructors interested in submitting an application for an NIH K23 Award, K08 focused on behavior research, or any K grant in the area of epidemiology or other patient-oriented research in June/October 2020 or February 2021.

Course Requirements: All attendees will be required to submit a rough draft of Specific Aims and name of mentor.

Course topics will include:

Specific aims, research strategy and biostatistics, IRB/IACUC issues, career development plan and biosketch, research management, and review process.

Anonymous: Karen and the course faculty are excellent. It is clear that are committed to helping early career investigators in their K preparation. The mix of didactic lectures and workshops was perfect for helping to develop an application.

Anonymous: This course was so helpful and a great resource. Karen and Andy were wonderful teachers and were very knowledgeable about writing effective K proposals. It's really nice that MGH offers this support to it's early investigators. The most helpful aspects, in my opinion, included getting specific input on how to write the main sections most effectively (e.g., aims, research strategy, candidate background/training plan, and biosketch). The workshops were also quite helpful. Additionally, I found the mock study section to be especially useful in terms of really emphasizing the importance of writing a clear, visually simple proposal b/c it demonstrated how quickly most people are going to pass over your materials. I found the panel of outside resources least helpful, with the exception of being introduced to Hung Lee. For the other two resource panelists, I think just receiving information about who they are, without devoting time to a panel, would suffice, since many questions were so application-specific.
