MGH Division of Clinical Research

Design and Conduct of Clinical Trials

Ended: Oct. 25, 2017

Design and Conduct of Clinical Trials
Sponsored by the MGH Division of Clinical Research, the Division of Infectious Diseases, and the Department of Psychiatry

Design and Conduct of Clinical Trials is an intensive thirteen-session course offered from early-September through late October. Physicians with a serious interest in clinical trials will be introduced to theoretical and practical issues facing clinical researchers. Course participants will learn how to envision, plan, develop and execute effective clinical trials. Study content includes research designs, protocols, ethical patient recruitment, informed consent, regulations, and clinical trial management.

The course is ideally suited for clinical fellows starting their research years, junior faculty pursuing careers in clinical research, and physicians with an interest in becoming more actively involved in clinical research. All participants are expected to use the course curriculum to develop and present a trial design at the final session of the course.

Enrollment is limited to facilitate interaction and individual attention. To ensure placement in the course, early application is recommended.

Reviews

Robert L: This is an outstanding course with dedicated and enthusiastic faculty and participants. Practical aspects are discussed clearly and in detail, and I particularly enjoyed the interactive aspects of the program, such as a dialogue between a clinical investigator and biostatistician to refine a proposed trial design until it is best suited to achieve the goals - a real treat! Developing an individual clinical trial proposal and working on it with the faculty at several stages in the course was a great way to implement the learning - and I hope to implement that trial in the near future! The course coordination was also superb and helpful - very grateful to Teresa and to the course directors. This is a wonderful opportunity that will increase career opportunities in this direction. Thank you!

Sean C: This is a fantastic course that introduces you to the concepts needed to develop and run a clinical trial (for both drugs and equipment). Most of the speakers are amazing and have a wealth of experience that they share with you. The course coordinators (Greg and George) are so passionate about this course and are genuinely interested in the participants developing a good understanding of the concepts. The interactive component of the course allowed me to develop my ideas for a clinical trial under the guidance of experienced trialists.

Anonymous: This course provided an introduction to a number of core research topics, including trial design, ethics, and logistics. However, this was very much an introduction, and while it is helpful for designing a trial and recognizing the important considerations, there is still much more to learn before being able to carry out a trial, and some of the lectures are only relevant for certain trials (e.g. working with industry, INDs) or at certain stages of clinical trial performance. Overall, very interesting and with good lecturers but perhaps ~50% practical to me at my stage of training.

I really liked the small group size, which allowed us to have greater real-time engagement with the instructors during the lectures. Also, they always had light snacks and drinks for each lecture, which is greatly appreciated for an evening class. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in clinical trials.
