MGH Division of Clinical Research

Applied Biostatistics for Clinical Trials

Ended: March 23, 2017

This four-session seminar series will be offered on Thursdays in February and March. In this series, participants will review statistical approaches commonly used in research. Each of the four sessions will focus on a different theme using concrete and realistic examples. In particular, you will learn how to perform specific types of analyses in the class using the statistical package called R, which is a free software package. This course is intended for investigators who are interested in clinical research.
Course Outline:
Session 1 – Introduction to statistics and computing
Session 2 – Linear regression
Session 3 – Survival Analysis
Session 4 – Repeated Measures
You can download R from this website http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/. R is a very powerful statistical package. The dataset that we will analyze each week will be posted course site. The datasets will be saved in comma delimited format, which can be imported into all statistical packages.

Speaker: Brian Healy, PhD, MGH Biostatistics Center

Registration is required. Please contact dcredu@partners.org with any questions.

This course is part of a series in Biostatistics which also includes courses in Basic Biostatistics. Upon completion of this series, participants will be able to: utilize biostatistics in the design of clinical research studies and perform statistical analyses.

Emad Salman S: Dr. Healey nailed each & every concept of R & biostatistics with par excellence. Undoubtedly, it's a privilege & honor to be taught by a very nice, kind, humble and a person with good sense of humor. It was one of the best learning experience of my life. Not only I learned about biostatistics but also about effective teaching & engaging presentation skills as well. Thanks MGH Research Institute for making this possible. I would like to know if there is any video available for entire course ?? It will be really helpful if we will have the video of entire course so that we an re-visit & revise whenever we feel stuck in R. Thanks and Stay safe.

Sara G: Can't say enough good things about Dr Healy. His material is very clear and well-delivered, and he's responsive to people's questions during class (is good about repeating the question and re-phrasing as-needed in a way that everyone understands the question and his answer to it). His love for the topic really comes through, and makes you love it too! So overall, very accessible course. What a like most is that it's not just a simple set of instructions (i.e. "this is *what* to do") but he also demonstrates *why* to do. The philosophy behind good, ethical statistical practice is such a welcome and much needed element to any statistical course in healthcare. I would love a course that continues the series to more advanced methods.

I would recommend this course for anyone who has never used R before and is looking to take the next step in streamlining analytics and creating beautiful visuals within R. My only issue with this course is that it was too short. I know that if this was a full fledged course, I may have involuntarily fallen in love with statistics.

While in the past I cannot say I particularly enjoyed learning about statistics, thanks to Dr. Healy that has most definitely changed. It turns out, as he has pointed out so many times, that statistics is indeed fun! Very fortunate to have such an instructor here. To get more than a first glimpse into R, the course could have definitely been longer.

Anonymous: I took this course for both a refresher of the biostatistics topics covered and the use of R as the statistical package. Dr. Healy is an excellent, engaged instructor and I hope he continues to offer biostats courses in the future. This served as an excellent review of topics I was familiar with as well as introduction to other analyses (e.g. survival methods) that I have not personally used before, but can now immediately apply to my research.

Lindsey V: Excellent course! It was an informative introduction to basic skills in R which are necessary for the kind of research undertaken by our group. The instructor kept the class entertaining and fun. While it was a brief course and the instructor did well to drop in hints about using R and tidbits about the coding language, I wish there could have been more about the R language itself. Nevertheless, would very much recommend this introductory course.
